Title: | Editorial Internship at Context Literary Agency |
Description: | We're looking for a summer editorial intern at Context Literary Agency.
Most of the job is reading, editing, helping us choose which projects are a good fit, attending weekly virtual meetings, and weekly calls where we'll go over short lessons about publishing. We will teach you to write letters to authors in the submissions pile, and this will be a percentage of the job as well. Please rest assured that this is not a place where you'd be asked to Xerox all day, pick up dry cleaning, or fetch coffee--even if we were working in person, we would not require these things (especially since Jessica thinks that no one else makes coffee strong enough). We really just need smart readers able to suggest insightful edits, and want this to be educational for you, too. Many of our interns go on to long, successful careers in the industry, and this experience would prepare you to be a full-time assistant at an agency or publishing house. Also, please note that we're really nice. No one ever yells here, and our clients are incredibly talented, smart, and helpful. We're a creative, supportive environment, and looking for those with creative and positive outlooks to join us. Then, at times convenient for you throughout the week, we'd ask for about 6-8 hours of reading submissions (your goal would be to find the best projects first). You can do this at any time you like, so long as you only send emails to writers during business hours. Please note that this internship will be remote even if quarantine is lifted. We don't think you should have to pay for Manhattan rent to work for free, and feel strongly that this is only worth it to you if we also train you to be as ready as possible for a paying job at the end of this. We want you to be prepared not only for standard office tasks, but for the complicated work and life skillset required for working in publishing in this unusual time. |
Requirements: | Internet good enough to work smoothly with Google Meet, headphones, a laptop, and about 6-8 hours a week to read submissions.
Ideally you'd be free for a Google Meet call each Monday at 1:00 pm Eastern/10 am Pacific (except holidays, of course) to go over your reading and cover publishing topics, then attend a weekly office Hangout 1:30-2:15 pm Eastern/10:30-11:15 Pacific. There is some flexibility here if you're our top choice and can't make this time. No previous publishing experience required. |
Company: | CONTEXT LITERARY AGENCY |
Location: | Online. You can be anywhere in the world as long as you have strong internet and are free during our meeting times. |
How To Apply For This Job: | Please send cover letter and resume to Jessica@ContextLit.com with "Internship Application" in the subject line. |
