Title: Business Manager, Educational Publishing
Description: Cheng & Tsui, leading publisher of Asian languages and cultures educational materials based in Boston, is seeking an experienced, tech-savvy, hands-on, and results-driven Business Manager to manage the needs of a company growing in the digital environment. Reporting to the President and participating as a member of the management team, the Business Manager ensures organizational effectiveness and profitability by developing and implementing operational and financial strategies, policies, processes, and practices, while also leading the accounting and the customer service group. The Manager oversees financial management, budget creation, strategic planning, human resources, general administration, contracts and legal documents, ERP/CRM/web integration and effectiveness, IT administration risk management, inventory control and manufacturing.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Manage the fiscal and physical assets of the company so as to (a) provide adequate logistical support to all departments, and (b) to maximize the before-tax operating margin.
• Assess and recommend improvements to operational systems and processes to support financial goals requiring changing needs and resources. Execute and implement business strategies across functional areas.
• Develop financial formulas and internal procedures to assess the feasibility, practicality, and profitability of new products and business ventures.
• Develop, manage, and monitor project and departmental budgets in collaboration with management team. Review status with department managers on a regular basis.
• Implement procedures for budgets, accounts receivable, and accounts payable for healthy cash flow. Develop financial reports and analyses consistent with publishing industry standards.
• Provide prompt monthly feedback to the CEO of financial results relative to budgeted expectations and significant variances.
• Oversee the timely collection of receivables and disbursement of payables.
• Manage capital assets, equipment, and other properties in terms of repair, maintenance, and purchase. Determine office space allocations and assess resource needs for all departments.
• Manage inventory, manufacturing, accounting, and office administration.
• Assess competitive landscape and work with sales, marketing, and acquisitions to set competitive pricing strategies, to maintain market leadership, while maintaining appropriate margins.
• Write, review, edit, and/or negotiate legal and financial documents such as vendor RFPs and contracts, author contracts, HR policies, distribution agreements, permissions, insurance policies, copyrights, and the like.
• Propose and administer a risk management plan to protect intellectual properties and proprietary information. Find cost effective approaches to minimize risks in network administration, cloud services, web hosting, internal and external piracy, etc.
• Provide guidance, direction, and support to direct reports and foster their professional growth.
• Oversee human resources and employee relations; assess and update policies and procedures related to staff recruitment, training, reviews, salaries, and benefits, personnel handbook.
• Lead needs assessment, implementation, and project management of digital workflow systems when needed in collaboration with technology consultants and department managers, including providing RFPs, handling vendor negotiations, customization of modules, user testing, rollout, and training.

Requirements: • Bachelor’s degree or higher in business administration or its equivalent and interest in technology.
• Minimum of 10+ years of administration operations and finance experience with 2+ years in textbook publishing preferred.
• Must be an organized, long-term, strategic planner with strong analytical skills, attention to detail.
• Expertise in strategic planning, human resources, legal, IT/Systems support, negotiations, financial analysis, and budget creation.
• Resourcefulness in setting priorities in a changeable, fast-moving environment where action is driven by customer demand, competition, products, and sales performance.
• Able to find clarity and solutions in situations that can often be ambiguous and urgent.
• Excellent oral and written interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to foster a company culture based on teamwork, integrity, commitment, and continuous improvement.
• Have skills in staff motivation, development, and retention
• Interest in global education preferred and knowledge of an Asian language a plus.
