Description: Voice of Witness is a San Francisco-based nonprofit cofounded by author Dave Eggers that illuminates human rights crises through oral history. We produce an oral history book series (published by McSweeney’s) that amplifies marginalized voices--those of men and women who experience human rights crises. Through their stories, we aim to complicate people's thinking, and foster a humanizing, empathy-based understanding of rights issues. Our series has included the stories of wrongfully convicted Americans, undocumented workers, and of individuals affected by rights violations in Colombia, Sudan, Zimbabwe and Burma.

Our education program brings these stories and issues into schools across the country through oral history-based curricula and holistic teacher support. We believe that empathy leads to the highest forms of critical thinking, and that oral history is a vital medium for fostering these qualities and engendering a more participatory relationship with history.
