Description: The MIT Press seeks enthusiastic spring interns in various departments. These paid internships are a chance for people who love books and journals to learn about publishing and see how a busy university press functions. Successful interns will make valuable contacts and gain experience at one of the nation's largest university presses.

Part-time, paid internships are available in Books Editorial (June 1- August 31), Books Marketing (July 1-August 31), and Journals Marketing (July 1-August 31). Hours will be negotiated, but candidates should be able to commit approximately 10 hours per week.

Internships are available in Books Acquisitions, Books Books Editorial: The Books Editorial internship will provide experience with a variety of editorial tasks, including checking page proofs, editing indexes, proofreading jacket copy, reviewing prepress proofs, and handling corrections for reprints. The intern will also learn about the editorial technology that we are now using at the MIT Press. College graduates and graduate students with editorial experience and familiarity with Chicago style are strongly preferred.

Books Marketing: The Books Marketing Intern will have the opportunity to be involved in many areas of book promotion. Daily tasks may include proofreading book catalogs, brochures, and other promotional materials for accuracy; ordering and sorting mailing lists; researching and building new mailing lists for use in future promotions; attending marketing department functions and meetings; reviewing marketing data and advising on buyer behavior; and assisting the books marketing staff on a variety of other projects. The Books Marketing intern will also have the opportunity to become involved in the department’s grassroots initiative, which seeks to identify new audiences of readers and build lasting relationships with organizations outside the Press. Candidates should be familiar with MS Office and have strong proofreading, writing, communications, and internet research skills. Previous marketing experience and familiarity with Filemaker a plus, but not required.

Journals Marketing: The summer intern will assist with our annual Journals catalog and marketing reports, perform market and social media research, craft releases for news items, contribute to our ongoing From the Archive Friday and Spotlight on Science features, organize promotional materials for conferences and events, manage routine updates to our website, and support the department with various projects as needed. Additionally, the intern may have opportunities to build special web pages for various journals. The intern should be well versed in the Microsoft Office suite (particularly Excel) and have strong internet research skills, a strong analytical approach, and the ability to communicate professionally via email and in person.

Length of Internship: 2-3 months
Requirements: The ideal intern candidates will have: a strong desire to learn about publishing, basic computer skills, excellent communication and organizational skills, the ability to work well individually and as a member of a group, an eye for detail, good judgment, a positive attitude, and a willingness to take initiative.
